I have had great success with Duplicator (NPE’s fitness business management course) and Auto Closer (NPE’s fitness business sales training). Both of these are well worth the investment and without them I'm sure I would still be training 30+ sessions a week.
And with NPE membership there are so many tools that I haven't had a chance to implement all of them yet. I just try to do something each month.

In July of 2006 I was subletting a cramped 600 square foot gym that was taking on water like a sinking ship. Literally, the corner was leaking from below and I though that any day I might walk in a find the place half under water.
It was owned by a neurotic, obsessive compulsive body builder
…who had decorated his facility with a bunch of eye bulging photographs of steroid infused athletes who had autographed their pictures for him. And to top it all off, at the entry way to the studio space, was a giant 20 x 20 photo of the owner, flexing on a cliff in northern Wisconsin in his Speedo. I never really thought about it until later, but I’m sure I lost some sales due to those photos.
All of this was preceded, of course, by a long and narrow hallway with a 7 foot ceiling that made you feel like you were walking into some kind of death chamber. I had an office across the hall from the studio, but it only spanned 100 square feet, and was situated right across the hall from the bathrooms so that every time someone flushed it was plainly evident, especially during consultations and coaching sessions. But it was a start, and I made the most of it. And now, it’s a great story to tell.
In July of 2006 I made 5K. Just one year later I recorded my biggest month ever at ~$28,600, that figure is almost double what I’ve been earning since my new studio opened in February. Yes, double!
I could be up all night buzzing and ranting and projecting for a fall and winter that I have no doubt will bring much bigger figures than that. Because, you see, once you get this stuff, I mean really begin to understand the transformational powers of these business systems, and you begin to implement them one by one, there really is no end to what you can accomplish. And with every success, comes a greater level of confidence so that pretty soon, you feel invincible and there is no doubt that you can reach any goal you lay out for yourself and your business.
$10,500 IN ONE WEEK!
This week alone, I closed $10,500 in sales, fought off some jerk who wanted to take advantage of my generous free session offer, finished my nutrition sales training so that I can begin implementing another big passive revenue stream, made love with my wife, took my kids to the pool, basketball practice, and the park, finished half of the first Harry Potter book (yes, I’m just getting started, but it’s a great way to take my mind off the business at night), and spent less time in my studio than I have since it opened in late February. “If you build it, they will come.” I can tell you that this is very true.
I FEEL LIKE GENE HACKMAN
I feel like I’m in that scene in Hoosiers. It’s the day after Jimmy takes a stand for Gene Hackman (the coach). It’s beautiful…they want to get rid of Mr. Hackman because of his unorthodox, yet effective coaching style, because it’s shaking things up too much. But Jimmy, the star player Who’s been holding out until now, decides to come back and play, but only if the coach is allowed to stay. The town is stymied and forced to take the deal because Jimmy is truly that good.
The next day during a scene before the next big game, Gene Hackman electrifies the screen with a line that sticks with me like an old friend. “After what Jimmy did for me last night, it would take the Indiana National guard to keep me outta this thing!” That’s how I feel right now, only it might be the Wisconsin national guard instead. And though I may not have that scene described exactly right, if you’ve seen the movie you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Nothing can hold me back now. Except me that is. And that’s the most beautiful part about NPE, the Personal growth.
In one of my favorite business books, “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind”, the author makes an excellent point… “Your income can only grow to the extent that you do.” That’s a powerful concept and one worth pondering.
But more importantly it’s a concept that both Eric and Sean understand very well because they have structured all of the work they do to help you grow, not only as a business owner, but as a person too.
As Sean has said to me on more than one occasion, being a little uncomfortable is a good thing, it means you’re growing. And if you’re growing, your making more money, and if you’re making more money that means you’re helping more people, which is what we are all here to do.
Needless to say, I’m fired up and I’m very uncomfortable, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds. Because if July brought me almost 30K and it’s supposed to be slow in the summer time, then I can’t wait for winter.

“Two years ago I was training seven clients in my 200 square foot garage with no air conditioning, and citronella candles lit 24/7 to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Oh, and did I mention I live in South Florida, which is at least 85 degrees 90% of the year. I had no marketing systems in place, except for an occasional ad in the local newspaper and of course word of mouth.
My home owners association was threatening me with a law suits for illegal guest parking and running a business out of my home; to say the very least, my business was nowhere near where I wanted it to be.
Also, to make ends meet I trained 2 clients at a commercial health club located about 45 minutes from my home (an hour and a half round trip). Although I hated every minute of working in this health club, and commuting almost 2 hours from my home, I relied on the income from these two clients heavily.
I was also running a boot camp three days a week and had at best 5 women enrolled at any given time. My total monthly income averaged- about $3200, which at the time didn’t seem too bad considering I had no real marketing systems in place. I had purchased Eric’s ultimate marketing program a couple years prior and would occasionally attempt to implement a few marketing strategies, but with no consistency. I had no plan, and definitely no strategy in place for generating new business.
Instead, I would simply wake up each morning and say: “ok, what will I do today to try and get a new client.” That didn’t work very well and was quite exhausting
In spring of 2006 I attended a self-development workshop by T. Harv Ecker. He’s author of The Secrets of a Millionaire Mind. After spending 3 days being inspired and positively brainwashed, I made a promise to myself that I would open my own training studio within the next three months. I wasn’t sure how I would do it, but I knew I would do it. 3 months later, Synergize! Semi-private training studio was born.
Upon opening my studio I decided that if I wanted to stay in business I would have to get really serious and consistent with my marketing. I believe NPE launched soon after I made this decision, and knowing Eric and Sean’s reputation in the industry, and the quality of the marketing tools in the ultimate marketing program, I knew NPE was exactly what I needed to get Synergize! ‘off on the right foot’.
Using the NPE tools I ran a seminar promotion with over 50 attendees. I created several lead generation sites that give me at least 25 quality leads a month. I learned how to create one page websites using homestead (this alone was worth my investment in NPE, because now I throw up mini-sites within a day). I implemented a staff generation lead system, and I have business owners all over town asking me to help them with their marketing, because they are so impressed with ‘my stuff’.
Currently my studio has over well over 100 clients, and each month we add on average 6-10 new clients, using the NPE sales system. I have three employees, including a fitness coach, nutrition coach and admin. And best of all I am consistently grossing 25-30 k a month!
Not to mention that, with the semi-private training format, I work no more than 20 hours a week in the business, and soon that will be cut to 10.
This summer I am going on vacation for 2 weeks. Thanks to the NPE marketing and management systems I am completely confident that while I’m laying on the beach in Brazil, sipping a caiperinha, (that’s THE Brazilian drink, kinda like a mojito without the mint) Synergize will continue to conduct business as usual generating new leads and converting the majority of them to new clients.

I remember working at my first job as a physical therapist assistant, I was young and really had never thought about where I would be in ten years.
After working hard for that company for three years, I had worked and watched that particular company go no where over that time. I started thinking about myself and if I stayed with this company do I really want to be treating patients when I am 50 years of age. I asked that same question over and over and the answer was always a resounding “no”. I watched management of that company and thought I could do so much more if I had complete control over the operation.
NEW LIFE BEGINS
So, in June of 2001 I decided to begin Chris Hill’s Personal Training as an independent contractor in the actual facility that I was working as a PTA.
I worked out an agreement with the owner, rented two offices and began my new life as a business owner. I went from working a routine 45 hour week to working everyday, schedule all over the map, making less money than I was as a PTA.!
“SLEEPLESS NIGHTS”
At times I really questioned my decision. I remember missing family functions, sleepless nights, working Sunday afternoons just to train a client. I treated each and every client as if they were the most important person on earth. At the time they were, they were my source of income.
During my first year as a trainer, I spent much of the time studying nutrition and exercise information.
SHOULD HAVE STUDIED SALES
Looking back I should have been studying sales and marketing. In year two, I started to realize in order to really grow I needed to have a business plan and a marketing attack.
I hired a professional to sit with me and develop a 5 year business plan with the ultimate goal to move in to my own space and buy my own equipment.
I remember leaving my consultant’s office feeling so defeated, after looking at the cost to run a business. It seemed impossible for me to truly make the desired income I wanted and have a life without grinding out 12 hour days, 6 days per week.
But, as my wife says I am very hardheaded, I like to call it driven, so I continued plugging away after my dream. I was very determined to make it work, so I felt at the stage of my life if I give up 3 to 5 years of my life, working hard, when I am in my mid thirties I will really start to see the benefit of my labor.
Between 2001 and 2004 my business grew at a good rate, it allowed me in April of 2004 to open my corporation, Personally Fit with three full time employees. I rented a 2,900 square foot space, bought my own equipment and took off. The first year was rough, I worked more than I had ever worked and made less money than I had ever made. I had many days of thinking “what are you doing”. It would have been much easier to just go get an hourly job.
I KNEW I WOULD DO IT!
My wife, family, and friends thought this stage of my life would just pass and I would go get a job with the degree that I spent six years working on. But after being more hard headed, more seminars, more books, I knew I would eventually turn the corner.
In 2005 I was able to hire more staff and begin to pull myself out of training so many hours, it felt great to work only 65-70 hours per week. I felt like I was really making changes. I added more square footage to my facility and allowed a trainer, Cindy Mashe to begin offering Pilates as a separate service at our facility.
As many business owners know the behind the scenes work is some of the most grueling hours you have. The time on the floor with the clients was easy. I continued to grow at a moderate pace, but felt like I was missing something, I needed more structure to my operation. I was relying too heavily on one on one personal training for my income. I knew for success I had to create passive income. Supplements, where popular, but I did not want to offer just any supplement, I wanted to offer the most grueling hours you have. The time on the floor with the clients was easy.
SOMETHING WAS MISSING

I experimented with a couple products but had no direction on how to present them to the consumer.
That is when I received an email from Eric and Sean about a net profit explosion opportunity selling nutrition products. I was on Eric’s list because I had purchased so many of his products over the years. I investigated the products, felt Eric was a trustworthy guy and signed up for the training in Orlando. I flew out for the training and have never looked back. By this time, I had a staff of myself and 4 full time trainers and 4 part time trainers and two nighttime staff.
The goal for me at the time was to learn a sales system and offer supplements to my customers that would help achieve better results and to create passive income. I researched the nutrition brand and felt it was one of the safest, quality products on the market. During the first few months after nutrition sales training with my staff I worked hard to pull myself out of personal training but just never could completely get out. It never failed when I started to pull myself out, a staff member would resign and I would be back in the trenches.
During most of 2006, after meeting Sean and Eric, I worked on restructuring the infrastructure of Personally Fit for more growth. Their role in coaching me with my business became much more than I ever expected. These two guys seemed to really care about the success of Personally Fit. They held my feet to the fire to make sure I got things done, but had a genuine concern about my progress. I had weekly accountability calls to keep me on track. This was a great learning experience for me, I felt I had a good business, but Sean and Eric really made me see the big picture and all the opportunity.
Well, it is 2008 and I am still in NPE, and still learning from Sean and Eric new things to propel my business to an even higher level. I still work many hours each week, but because I love to, not because I have to. There is a big difference between the two. The stress levels are much lower with option one.
AND THE RESULTS...
In 2008 I have been named Entrepreneur of the year in Longview, been on T.V., and am having record breaking sales each month in my studio.
My income now is not directly tied to one on one Personal Training, thanks to Sean and Eric pushing me to start group programs. I consistently have a inflow of cash, and know each month approximately how much that is going to be. In the past I had no idea.
Our new nutrition program with NPE is something that has already opened several new opportunities in business for me. I have finally achieved several milestones in my business career at age 35. I plan on continuing to be “hard headed” and plunging forward for the next 5 years.

I made all of the mistakes at the beginning because I was ego driven and uncoachable. I now know there are many ways to be right (i.e. 3 sets of 14 with medium weight or 3 sets of 10 with heavy weight etc) and I am happy for someone else to be right and for me to be rich! I learned who to take advice from (someone who has done it in reality not just theory) and I applied the advice and strategies that they taught.
My biggest mistake was not having any systems in place and not getting expert advice from the start. I did not have a process for getting new leads, converting them into sales, or for finding and hiring the right staff. I was not charging anywhere near enough for what I did and so I was attracting negative, non compliant time wasters to my business.

Now my business is booming and I have started another company in which I am working full time and loving it. At this current rate of expansion I will make $200,000 to $300,000 profit for this calendar year and a business broker has told me I would get 2 to 3 times that if I put it on the market because it could be bought by an investor not just an Owner/Operator.

BEFORE NPE
I was not attending to the myriad of things that a successful business needs to run efficiently and effectively. I became like many of my clients that had come to me for help with their fitness goals: they knew they needed to be fit and exercise, but were paralyzed by the many variables and how to manipulate them to suit their goals.
I believe it was Stephen Covey who defined the term conscious ignorance: someone who is aware that they are doing something wrong, but they aren't sure exactly what it is or what to do about it. That was me in relation to my role as a business owner.
AFTER NPE
we were able to decisively determine how much money to reinvest in our business, how much time I needed to spend working on the business versus in the business, how many employees I would need to hire, how to find, interview, and train employees, and how to reassess our business health and plans for growth.
We are still a small business, but since learning this information, I hired 2 trainers and 2 admin staff, and have already achieved a quarter of our projected growth. NPE has allowed us to focus on what is needed to grow our business the right way, and truly delivered on showing us the best way to accomplish this. Even as we are embarking on some major changes in business operations and growth, I'm finding more time to spend with my family and not missing workouts.

I had grown my business to two studios but did not have a good sales systems in place.
After getting the NPE 7-Step Sales System, I immediately increased my sales dramatically.
HOW DRAMATICALLY?
Before using the system my average package was $700 with a closing rate of 50%.
With the NPE sales system my average package sold was $2,300 (not counting nutrition sales) with a closing rate of 90%.
I had my largest month ever in revenue at $74,000 immediately after implementing the sales system and then in January, we hit $100,000 in revenue.

MISTAKES HAVE MADE IN THE PAST THAT HAVE SINCE BEEN RECTIFIED
1. No consistent marketing - “we’d throw money at the wall and pray to God it stuck. Didn’t track any of it. NOW I have a monthly marketing budget of $5K for direct mail, email, radio (limited) and space ads/inserts. I’m planning to invest in Infusion CRM/database management/marketing in 2008 to automate everything!
2. No sales process, trainers handling sales...a complete disaster. Close rate was a measly 50% (on a good day) with an average ticket of just $720. NOW the NPE sales system is locked in and we’re rockin’ it. Pre-screening prospects, set-in-stone consult days/times, no more free sessions. My close rate is now holding steady at 90% with average ticket sale of $22508 (not counting nutrition sales). We now sell from a position of power!
We actually have a waiting list for our primetime spots.
3. Poor management—I wasn’t managing anything. Trainers sucked, systems sucked and my business sucked.
Now we have systemized everything. Checklist for consult, demo session, eval session, nutrition consult, client management, staff training and reviews. I’ve also hired a bookkeeper who does ALL my QB entering, pays bills (I sign checks), meets with me monthly to review/analyze P&L’s, budgets, balance statements and forecast for the next month1.
This is in addition to my quarterly meeting with my CPA for tax planning and deeper analysis of the numbers.
I walked into my bank last week (I called them to set the meeting) and came armed with report after report: P&L, Balance Sheet, Trained Sessions comparisons 2006 vs. 2007, Average Trained session revenue (this number is more important than total number of sessions), Average revenue per visit, client renewal and retention numbers, etc. They were blown away!11 They said whatever I need in 2008, they’ll support me. I’m already light years past the thoughts, feelings and observations I shared with you guys in my letter from last year.
I’ve seen tremendous growth in my time in NPE, both professional and personal. Your tools have helped me bring in tens of thousands of dollars. Just take a look at the numbers. But the growth goes well beyond the dollar sign. In my first letter to you, I told you that I was ‘primed and pumped’ and ready to kick ass. Well, that was the truth. From the comfort of my office, editing away at my ACT fields, I have grown to two studios, blowing my best month out of the water by $20K, and not even thinking about my studios on the weekends. (That has enabled me to reunite a relationship with Joella, an old flame.)
All of my marketing was… well… crap. No A/B offer, big fat FT logos, meaningless pictures, etc. I’ve continued to write and tighten up my message, and with your coaching, always tweaking the media.

We’re about a year and a half into our infancy or development as a company. When we first started, we were the main technical skills of the company. We were doing the majority of the training. Fortunately, we already had in place administrative staff that were working our front desk for us, and we had our bookkeeper.
So those roles were already in place when we started; however, by no means were we giving them the amount of responsibility and work that they could be doing. We were still doing too much of it ourselves. So over that first year in business, in 2007, we gradually started to add on other trainers as our schedules were filling and there was definitely still more room to fill the studio with more clients and more members. We hired on a couple more trainers that have now grown into full-time trainers at this point, which is excellent. That allowed us to leverage a few more things and gave us a little bit more time to step away from the training and spend a little bit more time on the business. In December of 2007 though, my business partner came to me and expressed that she needed a change. She loved the training but she wanted to get out of the ownership side of the business.
At that point, I was still training 30 hours a week, on top of that, doing a lot of the administrative work—marketing, promotion, hiring instructors, planning group exercise classes, working on the print advertising that we did. And initially I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of potentially buying out her share of the company, thinking, “How am I going to do this? How am I going to take on sole ownership of the company when I’m already working hours and hours and hours every week?”
In my decision to not only take on the full company and buy out her shares, I also knew that I had to make some changes and I needed to get things systemized. So when I was introduced to and made aware of the NPE management system, I thought, “I have to try this. I need to see what they have to offer, see how they’re going to coach me and train me. If the program comes with templates, ideas and forms already in place, then I can do this.”
So this was my first step and from that, I was able to create concrete performance contracts, performance evaluations. I was able to actually really envision and map out my organizational structure and where I wanted that to go. The beauty of it was that the forms and templates were there; I just had to tweak them and revamp them to my particular organization.
TIME SAVING
The amount of time I saved was amazing, and it also became a very realistic task for me.
I am very, very excited about the month ahead. What would I say if somebody asked me “Was it worth it? I would say definitely, and for three primary reasons: One, it’s going to teach you what you need to do to step away from the technical side of the business and get into the running of the business. The other big thing is the time you’ll save.
The coaching, the templates and the forms are already created for you. Often that is the biggest stumbling block or obstacles, just a lack of time, and now with all those things in place, given to you in that course, it saves you the time of recreating the wheel. And I guess the third biggest thing I would say is that I no longer feel like an island.
I was sitting on webinars and training sessions, hearing questions and answers of the same things I had questions about. Hearing other people, personal trainers, studio owners talk about their challenges, their obstacles, things they were dealing with, that were the exact same thing and the exact same industry as I was dealing with. So it was so refreshing to know that I’m not an island, that I have this whole network of people that are going through the same things, that we all have solutions and tools that we can share.
Having the NPE forum, being able to e-mail people, access resources, getting things in the mail, it’s like Christmas every time I get something in the mail! Even my front desk assistant here, Lily, is always like, “Oh, you have another present!” and I think she gets excited to go get my mail for me.
