NY Man Sues, Claiming Fast Food Ruined His Health
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A 5-foot-10-inch, 272-pound man has sued four major fast food chains, claiming their fare contributed to his obesity, heart disease and diabetes, his attorney said on Friday.
The class-action lawsuit, filed in the Bronx Supreme Court on July 24, is seeking undetermined compensatory damages against McDonald's, Wendy's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King on behalf of 56-year-old maintenance worker Caesar Barber and others.
Why is this important to you?
Because it gives you an opportunity to make a STRONG STAND.
See, the way to get free publicity is to be an outspoken advocate or to vehemently oppose a certain position.
Being milk toast – being vanilla – being middle of the road – will NOT get you into the media. But stating a strong position on something will.
I don’t know about you, but my feeling is that this type of lawsuit represents the harbinger of doom for our society.
I’m not being negative. I think most people agree with me and that we will ultimately be okay. But this type of ABDICATION OF RESPONSIBILITY really pisses me off.
Here’s a fat tub of goo who is blaming fast food restaurants for his condition. He takes no responsibility. Instead, he paints himself as a VICTIM. I just want to smack him upside his head.
The sad truth is that he is not alone. Many Americans are searching for ways and reasons to be VICTIMS.
Maybe they are victims. But only of themselves. There’s no one else to blame.
It’s like the people who smoke cigarettes for 20 years, get cancer and then sue the tobacco companies. I mean, come on. It says RIGHT ON THE BOX that this product will probably give you cancer!!!
Yet the “victims” win these lawsuits. It’s scary.
Anyway, were I in your shoes, I’d dash off a STRONGLY written press release RAILING against this idiocy, making a connection to this lawsuit and offering myself up as an EXPERT on health and fitness who will provide a PROVOCATIVE interview about how so many people think it’s okay to abuse their bodies and then blame someone or something else for the state of their health.
Remember, I’ve said it many times before, the SINGLE BEST OPPORTUNITY for you to gain free publicity is by tying your message to a national EVENT. Something that’s already in the news.
This is just such an opportunity. As was the Southwest Airlines position that they are going to charge fat folks for two seats (remember that from last month?).
Speaking of publicity, the television show 48 Hours recently did an interesting piece.
They did a piece about a woman named Hermene Lee, who is the self-described “food nazi.” I think that’s a terrible choice of slogan, but, whatever.
Anyway, she’s a 70 year old lady who has a nutritional counseling business somewhere in Southern California. She charges $600 for 14 counseling sessions. Apparently, she has lots of big name clients (Hollywood types – she could definitely be charging them more).
But here’s what interesting about her. SHE IS NOT SAYING ANYTHING WE DON’T ALREADY KNOW.
She prescribes a well balanced, low-fat, low-carb diet. Healthy eating, plain and simple. She says, “it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle.”
So, how does someone who has nothing new or revolutionary to say get so much press?
Well, in her case, it’s not about what she says as much as it is about who she is. She’s 70 years old, for gosh sakes. She works out every day. But most of all…
SHE’S AN OUTSPOKEN ADVOCATE!!!
She says what she believes and believes what she says. She takes a strong position. And it certainly helps that she’s a character. Almost a caricature.
What YOU have to do is look at this and ask yourself, “what do I believe so strongly that I’m willing to put myself on the line, possibly suffering the slings and arrows of discord, to ADVOCATE.”
The secret to getting free media attention and promotion is to BE OUT THERE ON YOUR SOAP BOX.
People describe my writing in this newsletter as “passionate.” That’s one of the greatest compliments I could ever get. I want people to TALK ABOUT ME. Even if they don’t agree, just TALK ABOUT ME.
That’s what you need too. Take a stand. Don’t be vanilla. Be an advocate. Business is like the Alamo. You’ve got to talk-the-talk and walk-the-walk. You’ve got to FIGHT!
But the only way you can fight is to know what you stand for. Do you know? Do ya?
Interesting tid-bit from the 48 Hours show. One of Hermene’s clients was shopping for food. She’s getting fresh green beans and she says, “all I can think about is how to make these taste good.”
In describing Hermene’s dietary restrictions, the same client says, “they’re horrible! Cruel! I can’t have the good stuff!”
Sadly, this is the way so much of America thinks. That beautiful, fresh produce must be smothered in butter and cheese and salt just to be even remotely palatable. They find the taste of a Big Mac to be superior to grilled salmon. They’d rather have French fries than fresh asparagus with lemon. It’s sad. It’s sickening. And it’s frightening. Fast foods and processed foods are the staples of our society.
But, on the flip side, it means that you’ll always have clients.
Get out there with your POWERFUL message. Take a stand and rail against the abdication of personal responsibility. Show how you can help. Show people how you can teach them to reclaim their health and fitness. DO IT!!!
